Open Discussion - Week One

Introduce yourself here, and add your comments about today. Once you're a "team member," you can start new posts and upload pictures. You can also start your own blog or webpage to host your art (better than using mySpace, you'll be taken more seriously).

Uumm, I think the movie's point was to make everyone aware. Not to frighten, push, or anger anyone.

It seems like a conflict of interest to spend so much time talking about how technology is taking over our lives and then go and create blogs. Just a thought...

Great point, Sarah, although I wouldn't say it's a conflict, just ironic. I pretty much felt the same way, both in the classroom and preparing this blog for the class, but not because I don't think it's worthwhile. I love blogs and social computing.

Anytime you need to get a bunch of people on the same page... in this case, this blog page... you're going to end up spending a long time just getting everybody going...

So, (everybody) use our time in the lab to explore the resources linked from this blog or out on the web. (Once everyone is a "team member" they can post images here too). There's a lot of great software on the computers, feel free to play around. Ask me about anything, I don't know everything, but I do know a lot, especially web and graphic design programs or photoshop. Or, use class time to write in your journal... always be writing (or drawing) at least something everyday.

After today, the blog will become just another part of the class, a place to document our class experience, and a way for people who do prefer communicating this way to have an equal say in the discussion.

Technology is neutral. It is used for both good and evil. Our feelings about it can be intense of course. Computer technology (digital media) is a medium, like paper, that you cannot escape. Even when you make choices to avoid technology, its impact is always there.

what you you all think?

Hi all,

In my opinion almost any technology can be dangerous if used incorrectly or if the user doesn't understand the rules, guidelines (or terms and conditions). Blogs are tools just like paintbrushes or spray cans. Lots more people fear technology than they fear brushes but I think it's because they don't understand it or haven't been exposed to it.

Eleanor: To keep this blog free of spamming, including comments change "Add your Blog to our listings?" from yes to no.
